Audio issue with my Mac. (2008-04-28)
This camera is great but I had to download Perian to get the audio to play on my Mac book Pro. The only other complaint I have about it is that when you play back your video footage straight out of the camera to your TV it only plays back one file at a time. Therefore you have to push the play button repeatedly to view all your footage. It's as if the camera creates a seperate file everytime you stop recording video. This can be very annoying if you have alot of short segments to playback. It would be much better if you could just hit the play button once and play back your whole hour of video. On the plus side this camera is very fun to use with it's great portability and simplicity of use. It adjusts to various lighting conditions very well and can easily be tucked into your jacket pocket when not in use.

This rocks! (2008-04-28)
I read a review from the NY Times and figured their electronics guru probably knew what he was talking about. He certainly did. The entire manual is a 5-panel card - perfect for someone like me who strives to understand technology, but just can't seem to quite get there. It's simple to use and download. I had a question about setting the date and time and their customer service responded to my e-mail in less than 24 hours (take note Verizon). I carry it with me everywhere and have documented lots of fun moments that otherwise would have vanished into history. The video quality is more than adequate - I might not win an Academy award, but I'm having a blast!

How to make your own DVDs (2008-04-28)
This little product is terrific. It takes excellent video and is amazing in low light. Very simple to use. I have noticed that you have to pay attention and move the camera slowly when shooting video to avoid a shaky look on the playback.

The Flip Video connects to your computer via USB. The Flip Video software is in the device's memory and starts when you plug in the USB. (While you can transfer the software to your computer it will not work as it gives you a message that it can't detect the camera.) Once connected you can save the video (which is in avi format) to you computer. It is stored in a file that it creates called Flip Video Library. When you plug the Flip in for the first time it downloads a Codec to your computer that allows programs such as Windows Media Player to play avi files. The software will also allow you compress the video (which uses about 30 megs per minute of video shot) for emailing. You do not lose the original avi file by compressing, rather it creates a new file. It changes the format from avi to Windows media video format that any recipient can read. (If you sent the umcompressed avi file the recipient would need to have the codec for the avi file format. While this is freely available by doing a google search, many recipients won't know this). The software also allows you to create jpg photos by clicking on a radio button called "Snap" while watching the video. The software does other stuff as well that I have not played around with.

As to making DVD from your video, Flip has a deal with CVS, Rite Aid and others that allows you to take the Flip to the store upload the video and for $13.00 get a DVD. Too much $$. Here are the alternatives: First you can plug you Flip into your TV via the standard composite video (yellow, red, white) cable it comes with and play it back on your TV and record to you DVD recorder or VCR. However this will show a count down timer in the top corner of your video. Another method that I recommend is the freeware program called DVD Flick. Fairly simple to use for anyone with some computer literacy. It creates DVDs from avi files.

I have a standard camcorder that I never have when I want it because it is too big to lug around all the time. This is small enough to carry around without any problem. Remember on vacation once you have shot the 30 or 60 minutes (depending the model you buy) you need to off load the video to a computer or delete what you've shot. This device would be perfect if there was a simple device that allowed you to off load the video to a flash drive directly.

After creating 21 videos with the little fella (2008-04-28)
I'm impressed with the whole experience of creating and publishing a video the Flip allows. Bottom line: it makes publishing a video on YouTube easy enough more people will do it, and people will publish more videos with it than without it. If you shoot in a bunch of light, get close to the camera for audio and minimize movement of camera or subject, the quality is quite good; very acceptable for YouTube. I think this MAY do for "citizen video" what the ipod did for listening to music. Buy one and start using it.

awesome for the price (2008-04-28)
wasn't sure about the quality, but after one video, found it to be just fine...wouldn't have thought it was any other camera. soooo easy to use and I like the feature that when you stop it makes a new chapter, but you can turn it into one video. And, I have nero and was able to make it into a complete movie and download it to a dvd. awesome...I'm so glad I took a chance and bought this!
